RESEARCH GROUP ON TOURISM BUSINESS MANAGEMENT (GIDEST)

BACKGROUND

With the setting up of Tourism Studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 1998, many researchers, lecturers and professors reoriented their research work towards this field of study. Over these years, then, a wide group of researchers has collaborated in articles, books and presentations, the main aim of which has been the application to the field of tourism of these multidisciplinary approaches.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

By establishing this Research Group, formally recognised by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, we attempt to create a breeding ground which fosters multidisciplinary research focused on the study of the present challenges faced by business schools in the tourism sector. The heterogeneity of companies and institutions in this sector – i.e. hotels and a wide range of lodges, restaurants and catering companies, retail and wholesale travel agents, central booking offices, land/sea/air carriers, leisure centres, amusement and theme parks, event companies, adventure sports companies, planning & promotion organisations, consulting companies, etc.-requires the cooperation of researchers who combine their synergy to create approaches which enhance the current level of knowledge about the sector and to give answers to the risks which threaten the efficiency and survival of these companies and institutions.
To begin with, this Research group will focus on issues regarding the tourism sector and related to:

-Measurement of intangibles
-Models of intellectual capital
-Proposals of flexible organisation structure
-Quality policies applied to the tourism sector
- Innovation analysis in the tourism sector
- Proposals of application of new technologies to organization learning
- Application of yield management to hotel management
- Influence of the legislation on the management and results of tourism companies
